Jeff McLaughlin is running for Mayor to restore trust, transparency, and accountability at City Hall. A lifelong resident, father, and public servant, Jeff is committed to working for the people — not for campaign donors or special interests.
Jeff McLaughlin has lived, worked, and raised his family right here in Guntersville. You’ve probably seen him riding his bike with his children, mowing his yard, or talking with neighbors around town. Jeff’s love for this community isn’t just something he talks about — it’s something you can see every day.
Before becoming a lawyer, Jeff was a schoolteacher, and for over 35 years he has practiced law while also serving 10 years in the Alabama Legislature. He earned a reputation in Montgomery as a principled “Lone Ranger,” refusing campaign contributions and standing up to powerful lobbyists.
National and local media have recognized Jeff as one of Alabama’s most statesmanlike legislators. Whether protecting our schools, fighting wasteful spending, or shielding the Tennessee River from overdevelopment, Jeff has always stood up for the people he represents.
Now, he’s ready to do the same as Mayor of Guntersville. His doors will always be open, and his focus will always be on the people of Guntersville.
“Simply put, because I love Guntersville. I grew up here. I raised my family here. My children attended Guntersville schools, just like I did. I’ve run a business here for thirty years. This is home.
I want to listen to citizens, improve our schools, strengthen our community, and make Guntersville the very best it can be.”
— Jeff McLaughlin
Our children deserve the best education possible, and that starts right here in Guntersville. For years, our schools ranked among the top in Alabama, and we should be back at that level. Jeff will work with the school board to strengthen classrooms, support teachers, and ensure students have the tools they need to succeed.
• Partner with the school board to restore Guntersville’s schools to a top-tier ranking.
• Invest in classrooms and teachers, not bureaucracy.
• Make education a central driver of community growth and opportunity.
Every tax dollar should be spent wisely. Jeff believes in living within our means and putting money where it matters most — not on wasteful projects or unnecessary expenses. By focusing on smart budgeting, Guntersville can get the most out of its resources and avoid burdening taxpayers.
• Eliminate wasteful spending.
• Prioritize core services like public safety, infrastructure, and schools.
• Keep a balanced budget that works for the people.
Growth is important, but it should be done intelligently. Jeff supports bringing new jobs and opportunities to Guntersville while protecting the character and beauty of our town. Economic development should benefit everyone, not just a few.
• Encourage small business growth and support local entrepreneurs.
• Attract new companies that align with Guntersville’s values.
• Balance growth with preservation of our community’s small-town feel.
Public safety is a basic responsibility of city government. Jeff knows that our police officers and firefighters put their lives on the line every day, and they deserve the tools and support to do their jobs well.
• Ensure competitive pay and benefits for first responders.
• Provide up-to-date training and equipment.
• Build stronger community partnerships between public safety and citizens.
From potholes to drainage, from sidewalks to speed bumps — these are the issues residents bring up most often when Jeff goes door-to-door. While they may not be flashy, they impact daily life. Jeff will make these common-sense improvements a priority.
• Repair and maintain roads and sidewalks.
• Improve drainage and prevent water run-off problems.
• Address traffic safety with smarter planning and solutions.
Good leadership means knowing when to pass the torch. If the President is limited to two terms, the Mayor and Council should be as well. Jeff supports term limits to ensure fresh perspectives and to keep leaders accountable to the people — not entrenched in power.
• Advocate for term limits in city leadership.
• Foster a culture of accountability at City Hall.
• Keep public service about service — not a career path.
Jeff has knocked on thousands of doors, listening to people’s concerns face-to-face. That’s the kind of leadership he’ll bring as Mayor. He believes City Hall belongs to everyone, and that every citizen should feel welcome to bring their concerns directly to their mayor.
• Keep the Mayor’s office doors open to citizens.
• Hold regular listening sessions with the public.
• Build a culture of transparency and accessibility.
Jeff has never accepted campaign contributions, and he never will. That means he works for you — not for donors, lobbyists, or special interests.
• Maintain a campaign free from financial influence.
• Keep accountability to the people, not to donors.
• Show leadership by example in refusing outside money.
This campaign is powered by people, not money.
